Dear Sister/Brother:

On behalf of your UE Local 170 statewide officers, I send you greetings. More importantly, I ask for your activism and involvement in the upcoming year.

Beginning two years ago we saw attempts to liquidate Jackie Withrow, Lakin and Hopemont hospitals, along with the Manchin Clinic of Fairmont. Communities in Raleigh, Mason, Preston and Marion counties would have lost hundreds of state jobs, along with essential services to additional hundreds of vulnerable and often elderly citizens.

Last year Local 170 was able, through determined action at the last minute in the middle of a snow storm, to avert the sale of four state-operated nursing homes. We knew then that it would be revived in the 2017 legislative session.

This year has been busier than expected and has resulted in some changing of our tactics due to the change in our political environment in the State Capitol. With anti-worker politicians in control of both the House and Senate this past session, we have had little success in advancing the agenda approved by our last statewide convention. We were successful however in having two study resolutions introduced.

In what has been a very busy month, UE Local 170 members mobilized to attend two rallies on Presidents' Day and the Mountaineer Workers Rising Rally on March 7. All of the rallies were at the State Capitol. The rallies brought together thousands of workers from across West Virginia to fightback against the Republican-controlled Legislature's attacks on workers this legislative session.

UE Local 170 is strongly encouraging our rank-and-file members to immediately contact your legislators regarding legislation - both the good and the bad - that has been introduced in West Virginia Legislature this session.

With West Virginia workers facing unprecedented attacks on our wages, working conditions and rights, UE Local 170 is calling on our rank-and-file members to attend our ninth annual Presidents' Day Rally at the State Capitol to stand up against these attacks.

UE Local 170 rank-and-file members from around the state descended on the West Virginia Legislature on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to begin lobbying their legislators in support of the local's legislative priorities for the 2015 legislative session. UE members from all of the local's chapters participated in the day-long lobbying effort, meeting with dozens of legislators throughout the day.

Since the end of the West Virginia Legislature's regular session, UE Local 170 and our members have been stepping up our local's political action work. The local has been encouraging our chapters to invite their local legislators to their chapter meetings, and the local has organized a political action committee made up of representatives from all of the chapters to help advance our local's political action work.

Mar 21, 2014

For the eighth year in a row, UE Local 170 members and their supporters rallied at the Lower Rotunda of the Capitol at the local's annual Presidents' Day rally. After the rally, the UE members and their supporters marched to the Governor's office to deliver their message.

With the final adjournment of the 2nd Session of the 81st Legislature now in the history books, UE Local 170 Vice President Chris Wolford looks back at this year's legislative session, the political action work of the local over the past year and the plans for the coming year.
