UE Local 170 Chief Steward Jamie Beaton attended a tri-national organizers institute in Mexico City from February 16 - 24. The Organizers Institute brought together union activists from the UE, the Authentic Workers Front (FAT) of Mexico and the National Confederation of Unions (CSN) of Quebec, Canada.

Like UE, the FAT and the CSN are independent, democratic, rank-and-file union organizations. The purpose of the Organizers Institute was to strengthen the international solidarity between the three organizations and to deepen the understanding of the participants of the challenges of organizing democratic unions in the three countries. The union activists participated in workshops and presentations on organizing and labor law in the three countries; visited FAT-represented workplaces and met with members of the FAT, who told of their struggles to organize and win contracts; participated in solidarity actions in support of Mexican miners and electrical workers; and visited cultural sites around Mexico City. There will be a news article on the trip in the next issue of the UE News. Jamie's participation in the Organizers Institute was made possible by the UE Research and Education Fund.
