Members from UE Local 170 in WV at the 2014 statewide conventionWith this year's state convention theme, "Arm and Arm - Strong Together," setting the tone for their annual convention, more than thirty UE Local 170 members and guests met on Saturday, September 20 at Canaan Valley Resort State Park to look back over the past year since their last convention and to map a course of action ahead of "fighting back, organizing, and building our union."

The annual state convention is the highest decision-making body of UE Local 170, where rank-and-file delegates, elected by the members of their chapters, meet to nominate and elect the local's officers, trustees, and delegates to national and regional union meetings; report on their chapter's activities, and discuss and approve the local's political action and legislative priorities for the coming year.

The rank-and-file delegates nominated and elected Donna Morgan, president; Chris Wolford, vice president; Melanie McCartney, financial secretary; Sandra Summers, recording secretary; Jamie Beaton, chief steward; and David Marple, Leesa Chalmers, and Jean Burnworth, trustees. All of the positions are voluntary and unpaid, requiring members willing to commit their time and energy in carrying out the policies and program of our union and our members.

The delegates also discussed and voted to approve the local's political action and legislative priorities for the coming year, including wage increases for state workers, improved safety and health protections, improved grievance and right to representation rights, and collective bargaining rights.

Bruce Klipple, UE National president, and Deb Gornall, UE Eastern Region president, attended the convention and brought greetings on behalf of the national union and Eastern Region.
